7 km. from Gobernador Gregores and 800 meters from provincial route 27 you will find Bella Vista cattle breeding farm with its famous historical site known as Canyon of the Dead. |
In 1921 this place was the scenery where 200 rural workers on strike were repressed and slaughtered by the X Horse Mounted Regiment commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Héctor Varela.
A desolating landscape of pebble stones and scarse steppe vegetation surrounded by hills where silence and history mingle will make you feel respectful of those fallen there.
During the repression, the soldiers, so as not to waste their time digging individual graves, opted for a common grave in the canyon where the workers were incinerated and their ashes burnt. |
In 1999 the site was declared a site of historical interest by the Town Council of Gobernador Gregores in memory of who were immolated to defend the dignity and the rights of workers. |
A cross has been erected in this place next to the first monument, where the air seems to bring the souls of these rural workers for you to join them in their song for freedom. |
