You will be transferred to the viewpoints area, where there are balconies to access to the different vistas of Moreno Glacier.
You will be overwhelmed by the majesty of this spectacle. After some minutes you start walking along the footbridge to get different vistas of the different fronts of the glacier. |
The central face of the glacier is mounted over Magellan peninsula and divides Lago Argentino into two parts forming a natural ice dam, which does not allow the water to pass from the south to the north part when it is closed.
Due to the intense rain in the area, the level of the water on the south part raises from 27 to 30 meters flooding over the surrounding estancias. |
Finally, due to the pressure of the water and the temperature difference between the ice and the water, the dam breaks and opens a narrow channel through which the water runs down to Lago Argentino.
Throughout the year, this glacier advances and closes. In three years, the level of the water raises and one day it breaks. This process has been repeated until 1998. |

At present the glacier is in balance. During the winter it pushes forward 200 meters, but during the summer it retreats, thus maintaining the same volume. |
