In Neumeyer shelter you can do this educative hike with all your family passing by a thick forest and Laguna Verde to Mirador del Pedregoso, from where you will see lake Nahuel Huapi and Bariloche city from a height of 1500 meters above sea level.
To go on this hour long hike you must go to Neumeyer shelter, 20 km. from Bariloche, along national route 258 to El Bolsón.
After 8 km. you must turn to the left through a dust road to Challhuaco Valley where the shelter is emplaced. |
In the city you can hire a guide, who will give you an interpretative talk about the region you are visiting.
Leaving from the shelter you must take the red trail on the right.
At the beginning there are 200 meters through a steep trail to Laguna Verde. |
As you walk along the trail, the guide will tell you about the different natural forms you see.
You will see some knots on the branches of lenga trees, a defence of the plant against a parasite called Llao llao.
You will learn about the age of plants.Those with a smooth bark belong to young trees, while rugged ones belong to old trees, some even older than 300 years. |
The lichen on the branches is called Old Man's Beard and indicates the purity of oxigen in the place, since it only grows in unpolluted places.
The guide will take a piece of wood from the ground and show you the work performed by worms decomposing what is rotten. Nature has everything under control. |
You will see trees with holes made by woodpeckers looking for worms to eat. In this forest there are golden-breasted woodpeckers, Chilean flickers and field flickers.
When the forest becomes less dense, you will cross a swamp and soon find Laguna Verde.
This beautiful lake is almost at the end of the walk. It is important not to bathe in this water or agitate it because there lives an endemic species, Challuaco frog, only found in this watershed. |
After a short stop in the lagoon there are 10 minutes walk to find Mirador del Pedregoso with an outstanding vista of lake Nahuel Huapi, Bariloche city and much more.
You will see flowers of different colors growing among rocks where violas stand out.
After some minutes for contemplation and some funny pictures you will start your way back to the shelter to recover energies with a delicious typical dish and then another walk, a new adventure. |
