Here is an amusing version of the city tour on board an authentic London double-decker bus. |
City tours are the first excursions one takes when visiting a place. They are almost mandatory proposals when it comes to getting the first impression of the city. But in San Martín, this classical tour presents an amusing variant: touring around the main destinations in town on a typical London double decker bus.
This English vehicle, a Routemaster with a Leyland 0600 engine, is a real collection jewel. In Argentina, there are around twenty buses of this kind and the one traveling around the streets of San Martín de los Andes used to show off its qualities at the Automobile Museum in the City of Buenos Aires before coming to Patagonia. Faithful to its origin, not only does it preserve its authentic appearance, but it is also part of the Classical Automobiles Club, whose headquarters are in Paris. |

This singular “foreigner” is parked at San Martín Square, from where it leaves everyday during the high season. It set outs towards Vega Maipú, a well-known neighborhood on the way to Junín, which lets visitors observe the urban development of the city. Then, it quietly returns to town to take the Juez Quiroga slope and go up to the former Sol de los Andes Hotel, where a matchless view of the city and Lake Lácar is displayed. Finally, it enters the Lanín National Park along the 7-Lake Road bordering the coastline up to the entrance to Catritre Beach, right opposite Paihuén cabin resort. |
As the red bus continues with its itinerary, the guides comment on the geography, the culture and the stories of the city.
Back at the urban shell, the last stop is on the waterfront for passengers to behold the magnificent water body surrounded by its mountains. |
