Monte León Island Español
Monte León Island
Taking National Route 3 to the south, after 54 km. you will pass by Estancia Monte León, an important livestock settlement of the zone. Then you must take a little local road among canyons and valleys of singular beauty that lead to the beautiful beaches of Monte León, a mountain that resembles a huge Puma.
At the foot of Monte León you will find a colony of Sea Lions, which travel from the colony in Pico Quebrado, a mating and breeding spot, where there is an estimate number of 1000 individuals among adults and breedings.
The tidal width is extraordinary. The low tide discovers an immense wet but compact sandy beach that allows for a walk to an important cave called La Olla, carved on the rock by the water , with an orifice in the arch, what permits the passage of natural light.
Fishing is a priviledge in this area. You can capture Sea Basses, Saurels and Atherels of interesting sizes.
Monte León is the first Sea Reserve of Argentina.
A great variety of sea birds nest on this island, such as Imperial Cormorants, rock and grey cormorants, seagulls, oyster catchers, etc. as well as an important number of mammals.
All camping sites in the area have the classical barrels called "chulengas" to make asados, public bathrooms with showers and basins.
Drinking water is contained in two big tanks of 30.000 liters each.
There is a Ranger who also offers touristic information.
