After you have visited the most traditional places in El Calafate, you should not miss the Regional Museum, where you will learn about the first settlers and the difficulties they had to sort out in the region in the mid XIX century.
The Museum is on the main street, Av. Libertador General San Martín. between Río Gallegos and Coronel Rosales streets, before the bridge over Arroyo Calafate. |

Inside this old building where the first neihbours committee used to work, you can see some archaeological material such as bolas, engraved stones and arrow heads; paleontological samples like fossils of different species found in the region; geological material; and also samples of the flora and fauna of this area. You will observe a great variety of birds in glass cabinets where their original habitat has been reproduced. |
Outside the building you will find some old tools used for shearing at the beginning of the XX century, and in front of it, two big carts which were used for the transportation of wool, the "white gold" of those times.
También podrás recoger importante parte de la historia de la localidad por medio de fotografías de los primeros habitantes.
The Museum is open in the morning and the afternoon.
There is an access for people with motion disabilities, and all information has been translated to braille system. |
