Capri Lagoon
Capri Lagoon
The Capri Lagoon is another beauty contributing to making El Chaltén stand out.
Reaching this singular lagoon does not imply major efforts. The hiking tour takes only 2 hours from town and may be done without a guide as the trail is well signaled.

You cannot get lost. It may also be accessed on the return from the hiking tour to Laguna de los Tres. This is the option we chose.

We left the Fitz Roy behind, which was still hiding behind the clouds, and retraced our steps through the valley with the hope of leaving the bad weather behind as well. We walked along as we enjoyed the sounds of the steppe. The Patagonian hares crossed the path in front of us, the chimangos hanged around in search for food and the birds sang sheltered from the wind.

After a good stretch, we spotted the waterfall creek, which ran between two walls to one side of the trail. We reached a sign post that shows the fork into the Capri Lagoon and the base campsite lay 2 kilometers ahead.

Peace

To one side of the camping site, there lies a natural vantage point featuring a great view of the lagoon. This is an ideal site to stop for lunch and remain watching the scenery for a while. When the sky is clear, a magnificent view of Mount Fitz Roy may be caught from this point. As this area is easily accessed, it represents an excellent choice for camping and organizing hiking circuits starting there.

After a few hours, we started our way back along the trail that got deep into the forest. Suddenly, silence was interrupted by a couple of woodpeckers pecking an old lenga trunk.

We stayed there for a moment watching them and then we continued going down the path as we observed the surroundings change. We discovered Mount Rosado and other sedimentary formations. In some clearings, we could already see the valley formed by the Río de las Vueltas (The River of Bends). It was a clear sign that we were getting near town.

We stopped to behold the captivating postcards of this wild natural scenery every now and then with the strange sensation of refusing to abandon this place, of denying the end of the tour.
