From Osorno in Chile to Villa La Angostura in Argentina you must take Ruta Panamericana Austral through Cardenal Samoré Pass, called Pajaritos in Chile and previously called Puyehue.
Leaving from Osorno through Carretera Austral, you must take route 215 to Entre Lagos and go on skirting Lake Puyehue to Anticura, distant 70 km.
Then you cross Puyehue National Park and you can see Puyehue volcano to the north, Puyehue Hot Springs to the south and Antillanca ski tracks near Puyehue International Pass. |

This pass, situated at 1314 meters above sea level, 42° 29´ 07" South and 70° 25´ 91" West is open all year round. It is considered second in importance at the international level, being directly connected to Puerto Montt, distant 220 km., to Osorno, distant 117 km. and to all the rest of Chilean Patagonia through Carretera Austral in Chile.
The road is almost all paved with sectors under construction where you must drive carefully. It is an important commercial pass with quite intense traffic. |

National Route 231 is a debris road with an average width of 7 meters and a good general condition.
If you go on from the pass you will find Villa La Angostura, a typical mountain village of outstanding natural beauty after 35 km., first passing by the bridge over the river Correntoso and then by El Cruce. |
Route 231 leaves from the city skirting Lake Nahuel Huapi and crossing beautiful coihue and lenga forests integrated to new urban designs, among which you can see Bahía Manzano resort a few kilometers from the center of the village.
From the route you also have a vista of Quetrihué Peninsula and Huemul Island passing by the old and traditional Hostería Santa María. When you leave the lake behind, you must drive 25 km. to the crossroad with route 237 to Bariloche and go on for 20 km. |
