Cholila Cholila

The City of Cholila belongs to the District of Cushamen, in the Province of Chubut. It lies a few kilometers away from Los Alerces National Park, one of the most beautiful destinations in Patagonia.

History goes that the first settler of Cholila was Mr. Ventura Solís, who led expert Francisco Pascacio Moreno to the lands located on the international border during his expeditions.

After its foundation in 1904, and with the passing of time, the area’s population increased as a result of the arrival of European and Syrian-Lebanese colonists who settled down in this valley and devoted their lives to cattle-raising and to keeping the customs and traditions they brought along from their countries.

Cholila is surrounded by various valleys located in the foothills of the Andes. They are known as Blanco, Cajón, Rincón and Rivadavia Valleys and they also share important water bodies, such as Lakes Cholila, Rivadavia, Cisne, Cóndor, Lezama and Pellegrini. These valleys, mountains and lakes captivate all visitors.

Tourist operators in these paradisiacal scenes offer recreation and outdoor activities among which fishing, horseback riding and hiking become the true protagonists during the spring and the summer.

The National Asado Festival is held in February. This event was first held in 1993 and ever since 2009, it has become famous throughout the country and summoned customers from all over the region as well as the best asado cooks in Argentina.

Setting of legends and true stories, Cholila was the destination chosen by gangsters James Ryan (Butch Cassidy), Harry and Etta Place in 1902. Vestiges of their adventures remain in the area and testimony of this old but interesting situation still lures tourists from all over the world.
