The meeting of the Neuquén and Varvarco rivers in northern Neuquén is a visual spectacle of nature. The viewpoint over the confluence of these contrasting rivers is located in the town of Varvarco, one of the most populated areas in this region, also known for being the gateway to the Domuyo Protected Natural Area. The environment is rural and peaceful, ideal for disconnection trips and contact with nature.
Mountain rivers, volcanoes, and fumaroles
The main attraction of this area is the confluence of the clear waters of the Neuquén River with the murky and more voluminous waters of the Varvarco River. The meeting point is a large viewpoint located near the Hostería Varvarco to enjoy the landscape and take a break during the journey through northern Neuquén. It is a walk away from the crowds that invites contemplation. In its upper section, the Neuquén River is characterized by its clear and cold waters, ideal for fly fishing and recreational activities such as raftingkayaking. For its part, the Varvarco River, darker and more torrential, is a mountainous tributary that originates near the Domuyo volcano and carries volcanic sediments from the Andean heights, especially during the melting.
In addition, Varvarco is the base for exploring the Domuyo Protected Natural Area, where the Domuyo volcano, the highest in Patagonia, is located. This area offers a landscape of geysers, natural hot springs, fumaroles, and mountains of great beauty. Due to these geological structures, nearby sites such as Villa Aguas Calientes are available to enjoy outdoor thermal baths. Part of the landscape includes geological formations Los BolillosLos Monjes, which attract photographers and geologists who marvel at these ochre and reddish natural works sculpted by wind and volcanic erosion.
A few kilometers from Varvarco is one of the most important rock art sites in Patagonia. The Colomichicó Archaeological Park has over 600 carved stones, a testament to the passage of ancient cultures. It is recommended to take this section of the tour with a licensed guide.
Finally, some roads are gravel and have sharp curves. It is important to drive carefully and check the road conditions before traveling.
