Tourism in Gobernador Costa

Gobernador Costa is the largest town in the Tehuelches department, with 2,696 residents (2022 census). It is 200 km from Esquel along National Route 40, on the northern side of the Genoa stream valley, among fields of horses and goats and the green of the steppe.

Things to do

  • Crafts Centre: also the tourist information office, with local products in wood, wool, ceramics and semi-precious stones.
  • Regional Museum: tells the story of the area through photographs and objects.
  • Rock paintings: an open-air site recalling the area’s first inhabitants.
  • Lago Azul: striking for the deep colour of its water and the surrounding vegetation.
  • Provincial Horse Festival: the town is its home.

History

By around 1905 there were already shops, such as “La Casa Blanca”, the Swedes’ store, owned by Oscar Lundqwist. The local development commission was created on 5 November 1930, and in 1937 a decree gave the town its current name, in honour of Manuel Costa, governor of Chubut from 1924 to 1925.
