Tourism in Lago Posadas
Lago Posadas — called Hipólito Yrigoyen until 2014 — is in north-western Santa Cruz, 7 km from Lake Posadas and 22 km from Lake Pueyrredón, at the foot of the El Águila plateau in the Tarde River valley. It has 662 residents (2022 census). Thanks to a microclimate, the valley and lakeshores support a varied flora and fauna.
Things to do
Both lakes offer excellent fishing for trout, salmon, perch and silverside. Excursions leave from the village to Cerro del Indio, the Garganta del Río Oro gorge, and treks to Mount San Lorenzo, the highest peak in the province.
Getting here
It is 175 km south of Perito Moreno, 73 km from National Route 40 and 330 km from Gobernador Gregores.
Climate
In winter about 20 cm of snow covers everything and frosts are mild. In summer highs are around 24 °C.
History
The village grew up in the 1920s around the main house and general store of the Posadas ranch, and was officially founded in 1959 as Hipólito Yrigoyen. Close to the Chilean border, the valley was a route for drovers taking livestock and wool bales to the Atlantic towns; some of the old inn-stores that sheltered them are still standing.
