In addition to having a significant historical legacy for Patagonia, the City of Puerto Madryn is a booming urban center with modern buildings.
The search for the past refers us to the ruins of the first Welsh settlement, located in Punta Cuevas. The most ancient houses in Patagonia were built in this site. Today, an exhibition center stands there and displays objects which would belong to the colonists and tell visitors the history of the Indian and Welsh cultures.
Three kilometers away, along the Camino del Indio (Indian's Way), between the dunes and the coast, the monument to the Tehuelche Indian is reached. From there, a beautiful panoramic view of the city, the beaches and the industrial park may be appreciated. |

We got deep into the city along Brown Boulevard and accessed the residential area. We took the Roca Avenue intersection up to the Hermandad del Escrofalo natatorium, a pioneer society of local divers, and the Club Social y Deportivo Madryn. Finally, we found ourselves before the monument to the Welsh Exploit, built by architect Estanislao Boris and sculptor Luis Perlotti as a celebration of the hundredth anniversary of the foundation of the city.
The ancient buildings and the church are assembled around the General San Martín square. As we advanced around the last roundabout and left the Luis Piedrabuena pier behind, we took Yrigoyen Street up to Mosconi and reached Chalet Pujol, present Oceanographic and Natural Sciences Provincial Museum.

The tour continues along Domecq García Street up to the Storni pier and the Aluar S.A aluminum plant, whose establishment located the industrial sector in the North of the city.
That was the end of a tour into which the past and the present of this important Patagonian city converge. |
